How to choose an iron ? Make sure you compare before you choose
Choosing an iron involves thinking about many different things.
What are you ironing?
If you’re ironing a couple of t-shirts and trousers, you’re probably going to be okay with any old iron at any old price. However, if you’re ironing tougher materials such as jeans, or suits and shirts for work, you might want a higher quality iron to ensure that you have perfect crisp clothes. You may have other specific needs for an iron, such as printing iron-on signs or images for t-shirts, and if you need this feature, the better iron you choose the better results you will get.
Safety!
Another massive thing to consider when choosing an iron is how safe it is. Of course, it is true that all irons from reputable brands and shops will have passed a safety test in order to be sold on the shelves. However, if you know you are a careless or forgetful person you should consider getting an iron with additional safety features. Many irons come fitted with a safety feature so that they cannot overheat or be left on accidentally. Other still, as you will read below, come with special stations to ensure that you cannot leave your iron on and burn surfaces and clothes.
How does an iron work? And The History of the Iron
The electric iron was actually invented in the nineteenth-century by Henry Seeley, an American inventor now famous for his achievement. His iron was incredibly heavy and took ages to heat up. Other irons developed in Europe at the time were likewise problematic, and sometimes very dangerous.
Irons didn’t in fact take off at first and were not a commercial success, but today every household has a simple and easy to use iron which bears little resemblance to these historical models. These modern irons work by simply heating up a metal plate electronically (to the perfect temperature for each type of material) and thereby flattening the clothes into a straight pressed shape.
There are many types of iron available to you and many things to consider. As well as the main points made above there are more subtle differences that you might want to consider when making your decision, which the rest of this article will discuss. The following sections will discuss how you might choose a travel iron and a steam iron for your home. The article will then go on to discuss where you might buy an iron, and how to get the best deals and prices.
