How to choose a hair curler iron ?

Curling tongs, as discussed earlier, are a little less popular than curling wands these days. However, if it is a pair of curling tongs that you are after, then here are some options and details you might consider.

Curling Tongs

Curling Tongs ae great for shorter hair and add volume to the hair. Remington and Babyliss are once again good options to consider. Babyliss also offer a pair that are specifically for creating waves in the hair called the Babyliss Wave Envy styling brush. This works by pressing the hair in one direction and then the other. However, some more seasoned users of hair straighteners believe that straighteners themselves are the best way to get curls, if you can learn how to do it.

The most basic tongs are very cheap, and can even be found for £5-10. One very cheap company is Wahl, whose products are available online.

Curling Wands

Nowadays, regular hair curlers use what is called a curling wand. These wands create spiral or loose curls. You should consider all the same things that are important for straighteners such as whether they have an adjustable heat setting that will be suitable for your hair.

If you have thin or fine hair you will want to choose a model with a thinner wand. This is because you will be able to get more curls out of your hair, as you need enough hair to wrap around the want. The thinner the wand, the more curls you’ll get. One model is the Babyliss Slim Barrel Curling Wand. This is true for tongs as well, and Nicky Clarke offer a Slim curling tong that will have a similar effect.

If you have thicker and longer hair you will want a thinker barrelled curling wand so that the curls you produce are the right size for your hair. One such model is the Remington Pearl Pro Curl model which has a particularly large barrel and costs around £90. Another brand worth considering that hasn’t yet been mentioned is Tresseme, who offer some products such as this that are worth a look when making your choice.

Whichever product you choose, the safety is a major issue. The straighteners and curlers can overheat and melt, and there are many horror stories about fires being started by these products or about these products exploding. In short, you must make sure that you turn off the product immediately after use. It is also a good idea to get a heat proof matt to put your straighteners or curler onto when you are using them because they can instantly burn carpets and beds if placed on flammable material.

Do not forget that most straighteners DO NOT have a safety feature which turns them off automatically. One company that do offer something like this is GHD and this can be very important. However, they are still dangerous when left along and whichever product you go for you will have to be very careful to make sure you are using and storing your straighteners and curlers safely.
